Lagos State Government Vows to Reduce Food Prices, Improve Reserve Management

The Lagos State government has promised to consistently pursue initiatives to lower the current high food prices and establish an effective reserve management system within the State.

The State government commitment follows the rebranding of the Ministry of Agriculture to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems.

Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, made the commitment on behalf of the state government while announcing the new name of the ministry.

She partly said: “Food, as we all know, is essentially the bottom line of all that we do as a Ministry which cuts across several activities, from storage, processing, logistics, preservation to packaging and that Agriculture encompasses a lot more than just production.

“A lot is happening behind the scenes to ensure that in terms of pricing of food, we can bring it down and the inclusion of Food Systems is a process towards achieving this feat”.

Relocate To ‘Higher Grounds’ To Avoid More Floods – Lagos State Government Tells Residence

The Lagos State Government has warned owners of all structures on drainage alignments and setbacks to relocate to the “higher grounds” areas.

The Governor Babajide Sanwo=Olu-led government blamed the floods on “the heavy torrential rainfall which started in the early hours of Monday and continued on Tuesday afternoon” saying they were only “flash floods in many areas.”

The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tunji Bello, explained these in a statement on Tuesday, adding that many of such buildings had already been marked in Mende, Maryland and Aboru in the Alimosho area for contraventions of drainage alignments and may soon be demolished.

He said, “The buildings in Mende were marked as the area is a low-lying flood plain and a drainage route for all the water coming from Agidingbi, Oregun, Opebi, Allen, GRA, Maryland up to Ogudu Foreshore.

“Now is the time for residents of all such areas in the state to hearken to the voice of reason by relocating to higher grounds to safeguard lives and properties because these drainages can contain water runoff when the rain stops just as it is happening already.”

Bello also stated that the recent flash floods were caused by prolonged rainfall.

“The heavy torrential rainfall which started in the early hours of Monday and continued on Tuesday afternoon has caused flash floods in many areas and I reiterate my assurance that a minimum of four hours after the rainfall ceases, the water level in the lagoon will go down, allowing water from major collectors to flow into it and enabling all flood water that may have inundated our roads and streets to leave the streets,” he added.

Breaking: Lagos State Government Gives 14days Eviction Notice To Alaba Rago Occupiers

After several months of negotiation between Lagos State Government and representatives of the occupiers of Alaba Rago over the modernisation of the market, Government through a joint team of Rapid Response Squad and Lagos Taskforce, has given the occupants of Alaba Rago a 14-day ultimatum to vacate the market.

The joint team, which was led by Commander, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi and Chairman, Lagos State Environment and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce), CSP Sola Jejeloye met the occupants of the market in clusters to inform them of the 14-day vacation order.

CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi stated that emerging security reports from the area have shown that Alaba Rago has become a den of criminals stressing that the State Government has concluded plans to modernize the place in the shortest possible time in the best interest of the residents.

He stated that, last week’s recovery of several guns in Alaba Rago by Ojo Police Division and the revelation by drug dealers that they regularly funnel drugs through the area to several parts of the State are the more reasons government need to move swiftly to modernise the area for there to be orderliness.

He noted that the demolition of the area is in conformity with Government’s T.H.E.M.E.S agenda on Environment and Security, adding that Government is bothered by the shanties and the filthy conditions of the area, hence modernising it would be in the best interest of the occupiers.
Egbeyemi beseeched the occupiers not to read ethnic and religious motives into the exercise, noting that Lagos State is a convergence point for all Nigerian, irrespective of religion, ethnicity or tribes.

CSP Shola Jejeloye noted that many meetings have been held with all the major stakeholders in the past and that the demolition should have taken place during the Ramadan. He added that Government was sensitive to delay it in order for those who travelled for the Ramadan to be around.

He stated that after the 14-day ultimatum for the residents to temporarily relocate for the cleaning up and modernisation, the team would not listen to further excuses from the occupiers.
