JUST IN: 40 killed, Dozens Missing As Boko Haram Goes On Rampage In Borno

Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have reportedly killed at least 40 farmers in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

It was gathered that the attack which happened around 4:30pm on Sunday in a farming community, Kayakura village, in Doron Baga ward, also left dozens of farmers missing.

This is coming barely 24 hours after two people were killed and a church was set ablaze in a similar attack on Chibok community, southern part of the state.

A local source said members of the deadly group invaded the villages in large numbers and started shooting sporadically.

“As we speak, many people are missing and they killed more than 40 farmers, predominantly those who escaped the attack in Gwoza local government area,” he said.

However, a security source in the area gave the number of people killed as 30.

“Thirty people lost their lives during the attack on the farmers in the Doron Baga ward,” the source said.

Efforts to speak to the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Kenneth Daso, proved abortive as his telephone line was not reachable as of press time. (D

Just In: NNPCL Hikes Petrol Price, Sells At N855/Litre In Lagos

There are strong indications that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has increased the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit popularly known as petrol nationwide.

A video sighted on Tuesday morning revealed that the product sold for N855 per litre at an NNPCL filling station in Ikoyi, Lagos, up from N568.

“N855 o! Latest news. N855, NNPC, Awolowo Road, Ikoyi,” a voice lamented in the background of the 23-second video clip which reveals the new pump price.

It was learnt that a litre is sold for as high as N925 at NNPC station in Port Harcourt Rivers State.

Although the NNPCL has not officially confirmed the increase, it has hinted at a possible increase as the landing cost reportedly surged above N1,000/litre.

The hike is coming barely 48 hours after the NNPCL raised the alarm that it owed importers about $6bn debt amidst the worsening fuel supply in the country.

After several denials, the national oil company admitted on Sunday that it was facing financial difficulty with a report indicating that the company is owing over $6bn.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited is set to become the “initial exclusive buyer” of products from the Dangote Refinery as the 650,000 barrel per day plant begins processing of premium motor spirit (PMS) also known as petroleum, report has indicated.

This is coming amidst the worsening fuel supply in Nigeria with the NNPCL indicating that the supply gap might get worse following its indebtedness to importers.

After several denials, the national oil company admitted on Sunday that it was facing financial difficulty with a report indicating that the company is owing over $6billion.

The NNPCL Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Mr. Olufemi Soneye had told Daily Trust on Monday that the company had been subsidising petrol with N500 per litre for a year.

“I think the important thing for us on our own part is to let the whole world know that we are in trouble if we continue. NNPC has been paying N500 per litre for every Nigerian that has been buying fuel within the past one year.

“So, the truth of the matter is that Nigerians have been getting cheap fuel because the NNPC is doing something for them. NNPC has been bearing the shortfall and it is now unbearable. The landing cost is N1,100, that shortfall is what we have been bearing,” he said.

He stated that it is left for the owners of the NNPC and the federal government to decide the next line of action.

Just In: Nationwide Strike Imminent, Says ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said it would declare a nationwide strike anytime soon following the federal government’s refusal to meet its demands despite consistent appeals.

Addressing reporters on Tuesday, May 21, during a news conference at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), the coordinator of the Lagos zone of the union, Prof. Adelaja Odukoya, said the union was fast losing patience over the government’s ‘insensitivity’ to the plight of its members and that of the public universities.

The conference was held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Akoka, with all the union branch leaders from the zone in attendance.

Addressing newsmen at the forum, the coordinator of the zone, Prof Adelaja Odukoya, said the only saving grace that could stop them from embarking on the proposed industrial action is only for the federal government to do the needful fast.

He spoke against the backdrop of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the Obafemi Awołowo University, Ile-Ife, between Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 May 2024.

He said: “Our union assessed the outcomes of its engagements with the State and Federal governments over the last few months, on matters pertaining to the status of developments around the renegotiated 2009 Agreement, payment of owed salaries and earned academic allowances (EAA), unremitted deductions made by the discredited disruptive and discredited IPPIS, proliferation of universities, and a number of other matters.

“NEC also had a critical review of government policies and actions that had led to the present deteriorated living and working conditions across the country and in our universities particularly.”

Odukoya noted that most of the issues mentioned had been lingering and unaddressed by the government for many years.

He dismissed the threat of a ‘no work, no pay’ rule by the government, adding that the policy is unknown in global labour laws of which Nigeria is a signatory.

On the newly-constituted governing councils for federal universities, Odukoya described them as ‘illegal.’

He said ASUU had urged the federal government to recall them about a year ago to complete their tenures in line with the University Act upon which they were constituted.

“So, we are not talking about the personalities and composition in the list but the illegality of constituting new councils,” he added.

Odukoya called for proper funding of public universities, rather than creating new ones, noting that it is far better to enhance the capacity and access of these universities and make them globally competitive.

He said ASUU would not relent in its struggles for better public university education and country.

Just In: Bandits In Military Uniform Abduct 20 In Abuja

Gunmen in military uniform numbering about 50 have raided Dawaki community in Abuja, and abducted at least 20 people, Daily Trust reports.

Witnesses said it was yet another daring onslaught by the attackers, who they variously described as bandits, armed robbers, terrorists, among other names.

Dawaki, a heavily populated neighbourhood, where thousands of workers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) live, is located opposite the Gwarinpa Estate, the biggest organised single settlement in Nigeria, located along the Abuja-Kubwa Expressway.

It was learnt that the invaders, armed with different categories of weapons, stormed Dawaki around 7.30 pm on Sunday, and operated up till around 8.30 pm.

The incident took place not long after kidnappers assaulted Shagari Quarters in Dei-Dei, which is about five kilometres away on the same Abuja-Kubwa Express way, and abducted the family of a Customs officer.

A resident of Dawaki, Hosea Christopher, said the bandits abducted 17 residents from three houses and on the street along Fulani Junction.

He, however, said five of the abductees escaped while being taken towards a mountain in the outskirt of the area.

He said while the bandits were heading to a forest around the Usuma Dam, they were confronted by DSS operatives.

“They immediately opened fire on the security men but there was corresponding response. Despite the fierce offensive by the DSS operatives, the bandits were able to escape,” he said.

Other sources said more than 20 people were abducted.

Abel James, a resident who escaped abduction, said, the attackers “Wore uniforms and had face masks.”

According to him, “But I doubted their genuineness when they started shooting sporadically. As they moved towards the community, I headed into a house under construction and climbed upstairs from where I kept looking at their operation, with gunshots as they were leaving towards the hill.

“We later learnt that two of the gunmen were captured by the security men that included DSS and soldiers who joined them later around the Usuma Dam, where the fire exchange took place.”

are not the only estate providing guns to our personal security outfits, many estates are doing the same,” he said.

We’ve been tasked to fix police vehicle

Mr Adeyemi, whose neighbourhood is under siege, said residents in the area have been contributing money to fix a police patrol vehicle.

“They (bandits) disturbed our sleep with heavy gunshots. The vigilantes that we hired could not do anything because their guns had no bullets. They too ran away when the bandits arrived,” he said.

Another resident said: “We had some policemen in our neighbourhood in the past, but they were withdrawn last year. Because of this latest abduction, the community has contacted the police. But we were told that it is either we buy a patrol vehicle for the police or we repair one of their vehicles for them to come.

“We have agreed to repair the vehicle for them. This is going to cost N900, 000. Each house has been asked to contribute N25,000.”

Just In: Expect Bigger Salaries Soon, IGP Tells Policemen

The Inspector General of  Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has appealed to the officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to shelve their planned strike, saying there are better days ahead.

Baba said that any strike action embarked upon by policemen in the country would be viewed as a “mutiny” which would attract disciplinary action.

The IGP, who was represented by the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), in charge of Southwest, Johnson Kokumo, stated this on Thursday while addressing the officers of Ondo State Police Command in Akure.

He explained that, although the Federal Government had announced the increment in the salary of the policemen, he said the process of its execution was still ongoing.

He said, “There is a need for us to reach out to you all. At times when certain things are working in your favour, one will not blame you because you are not informed. We need to let you know what the federal government and the President, Muhammadu Buhari, and the Inspector General of Police have in offing for the personnel of the Police force.

“President (Buhari) announced a salary increase from his benevolence. The salary increase is now being processed, and computations have already begun. There is a procedure and process that it must take and there are also numbers of departments that it must also pass through and these sections of the police are working hard to ensure that we have this salary increase effected any moment from now.

“We would have smiles on our faces soon but let me caution that you don’t allow disgruntled elements to lure you into anything criminal or inimical to your work or your profession. I know the arrangements on the ground. I want you to sit down and look at the percentage of salary increase. The computing of this salary increment has to do with enough time of diligence.

“We need to work diligently for the actualization of these prayers and not to engage in any strike. You all know the consequences of mutiny. You will never be found guilty of committing mutiny, that is just my prayer,” he said.

While asking police personnel to eschew unethical behaviours, the IGP charged them to discharge their duties in accordance with the law.

He said the police needed to respect the rights of the citizens, reminding them that their salaries were being paid from the taxpayers’ fund.

In his remarks, Commissioner of Police, Mr Oyediran Oyeyemi said the rank and file of the police in the state are fully in support of the IGP.
